My new '01 Eclipse GT

I just bought an 01 GT from a coworker (of which has gone to school for automotive work and has is vastly more knowledgeable than myself in regards to cars) and I understand how the tectonic transmission allows for Automatic and the 4-speed manual but how do I know the most optimal times to shift first to second, second to third, and so forth? Also, which modifications could I make to my car for performance? First car, new to cars, just looking for any helpful advice/tips
