A tuner. On an Eclipse.

Hey everyone,

I mentioned this in a previous post but it didn't get much attention. I was browsing CarID for some performance chips and the only one that was said to work on my Eclipse was something called a JET "V-Force Plus Performance Module". It claims to improve horsepower and throttle response but I call BS. I read around and people said its a waste of money and that it literally is just a monitor.

What do you guys think?

None of those plug and play tuners will work on our car , it's a waste of your money,

Only way to tune it is a standalone ECU, piggyback, or ECU reflash by only 3-4 people in the world,
Look up Hackish, he is who I used for my tune and lots of others

Yup CMTurner is right, those plug and play tuners are all smoke and mirrors they don’t do anything at all it’s all rubbish.
Only time those plug and play “performance chips” were actually doing anything was in the early days of computerized cars and fuel injection when people were taking apart the ECU and quite literally removing the programming chip and replacing it with a performance chip that had different maps programmed into it, talking about some 80’s and 90’s cars probably American ones like Mustangs, etc.

However that’s all in the past for anything 1997 and newer for the most part, what everyone does now is what is called an ECU Reflash, this allows you to connect a computer or handheld tuner to a car’s OBD2 port and put the ECU into a reprogramming mode and literally overwrite or read off the definition file containing the maps and tuning information from the car’s computer

Of course there’s also standalone engine management systems but that’s out of the realm of what most people are trying to accomplish unless you’re building a track only track monster or you watch too much Street Outlaws lol

There’s also piggyback systems like the AEM FIC, however you will have to cut up your car’s wiring harness and cause destruction and it still isn’t as good as a real reflash but then you can tell the ECU to do exactly what you want to do, disable catalytic converters codes, pass E-Checks with illegal exhaust systems, etc

So the best option is the actual ECU reflash, you’ll need to buy a Tactrix Openport 2.0 cable $180 and no reflash adapter needed for this particular car, then get in touch with one of the tuners for this car such as Hackish

Unfortunately no tuner or company ever made a handheld tuner for the Eclipse 4G such as a Cobb Accessport tuner you see for Mustang, Focus RS/ST’s, WRX’s etc, so our only option is the Tactrix cable reflash using supported software and tunes with a laptop, you can also use the Tactrix cable on other cars, I use mine for my Eclipse 4G and my ‘02 WRX, although for the WRX there’s a much larger tuning scene especially for the 02-07’s and there’s free software and tunes available as well as paid for tunes, or pro tuning shops that custom tune your car on a dyno, however that’s big $

See that's what I thought. I was reading plenty of comments and reviews on the so called "tuner" and it was a good 50/50 mix of people saying it added much more power to their car, or that it did absolutely nothing to the cars performance. You can sort of tell who knew what they were talking about.

Now about the ECU reflash. My knowledge is extremely limited in the field although I do understand that you can plug the device into your OBDII port under the dash. I would assume I need to get in touch with Hackish and he will send me a file (for a sum of money) that I need to send to the device from a laptop?

Is Hackish on this forum?

That is correct. He gives you a reflash, then you data log and then he gives you a tune specific to your car (it's not an off the shelf reflash, he really tunes cars)

He is on here, but you'll have more luck elsewhere to find him. Look up the Fastworks Tuning forum. That's his

Just a dumb question since i've never had a car tuned. Does Fastworks do the logging? I am in the process of getting everything i need together. Since I know my chromebook is useless.

Continuing tuners topic

So which are you guys recommending to use? I mean at least for Eclipse, even though right now i am looking for my shelby. Btw, if you guys are familiar with tuners. Maybe you can check which one I can use. Any opinion would be appreciable.

I definitely vote Fastworks. Way more features, and allows you to edit it, as you get a license to the tuning software.
