New custom lockout design - Completed!

This is a new thread based on the following research:
https://club4g.org/board/4g-eclipse-g...-redesign.html

I'm one class into Solidworks @ BCIT so I thought I'd get rolling on an early design for a new lockout. To keep it cheap, simple to install and fabricate I've gone for a latte friendly design. It'll be designed to work with a TWM/Ralco GS shifter.

Not happy with the handle section so far and any ideas/advice would be greatly appreciated. Mechanically the plan is to compress the spring between the top of the lock and shift knob. Still working on creating a bottom limit that won't require drilling.

Here is what I've throw together so far. It's VERY rough and needs measurement info from a TWM/Ralco shifter (in the mail).

edit:

Here is the completed drawing from this post further down (https://club4g.org/board/4g-eclipse-g...tml#post249223):

All I ask is that if you found it useful, and pity those of us who spend way too much time and money for zero profit, to send me a donation. How much is up to you
edit: Had to remove the donation link as it was dead and I'm too lazy to fix it. Nobody ever used it anyways

You should make it where you can use any shift knob. I will never return to the RL if I have to stick with only a few knobs.

The spring in the stock lockout has a 14mm diameter. I suppose I can design it so you can use any knob that has at least a 14.5mm inner diameter (pretty much all of them).

aluminum is always nice, found that that most annoying part was drilling the shifter for a guide pin cause the lower tab in not the same diameter all around

I'm thinking of using the taper near the middle of the GS shifter to set the lower limit of the lock on the shaft. I'll have to get the measurements to make sure that will work. The idea is to completely avoid any drilling or pins.

Starting to have second thoughts about the base. I'll need to look a little closer at mine, but I think it may cause issues in the other gears once the throw is decreased. May have to make it a two piece.

ya ratios can be deceaving, a small tollerence can throw you off. im still unsure about getting away without having a guide pin. its orientated that way for a reason, might work if you made it in 2 peices and have the inner piece as a tube with a male guide and attach it with set screws then have the outter peice as u have drawn up with a keyway the whole length as the guide. one way of solving it

Anyone have any ideas for the handle?

I've put that one in since it's easy to machine and more or less like the stock one. If I turn out making the whole thing directional then I'll probably make a tab on the back to pull up instead of the whole ring. That way a normal 5 speed knob will look more natural.

Ok, here is what I've got based on the specs for the Ralco shifter:

After doing measurements I've figured out that it can be left symmetrical and still have ample clearances. Simpler the better so it can be cheaply machined on a lathe rather then CNC'd. The stock spring will be loaded between the top of the lock and the bottom of the interior of the knob. Bottom limit will be the flat taper on the shifter shaft. Works out that it's machined at pretty much the same height as the bottom of the stock lock.

I've assumed you'd be using a stock GT shift knob but it should fit a variety of other 6 speed knobs. If you guys can provide some dimensions on the bottom of other knobs I can make sure it's more universal.

I'm still in the prototyping stage but I'll let you guys know if I plan to make a bunch.

I don't have one so I can't be sure. Since I'm using the knob for spring retention I get the feeling it's going to be more for knobs designed to work with a 6-speed.

I'm going to go over to a local machine shop this week and get it prototyped. Then I should have some pictures so you have an idea of what it'll look like.

Ok guys, I know I've kind let this thread rot for a bit but I have been hard at work.

The lock is designed and tested on a TWM/Ralco GS/Lancer/Evo short shifter with the following design trait:

If your version doesn't have this, don't panic. I may be able to make it work but I'll need some specs from you. PM me.
I'll also willing to help with some minor customizations.

So your probably wondering "How much?!" and "When are you going to make them?!".
I'm not making them, you are. Machine shops are everywhere, just give them the drawing and ask for the material of your choice (I recommend gold ).
Since I'm well aware there is no real money to be made with this and I'm too damn lazy to ship them all over the continent I'm making the design available to all, for free.

Here you go: http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...rse_lock-1.jpg

PS anybody who is wondering about fitment with the knobs I made, I modeled the 6 speed knob from the stock one. So they should work with his design fine.

Revving this thread..so let me get this the gs ralco has a shorter throw than the ralco/Twm 6 speed with the lockout. Is the Height different?..last question is if both those questions are yes, does anyone make this on the forums anymore? Very interested. Thanks

I'm intersted aswell. I just got my GS short shifter from TWM. I have a GT 6sp. And wanted the reverse lockout. But talking with TWM they dont make it anymore. I belive Ralco still does though. So I ended up getting the gs version because it is shorter by 1.5" in height. I'm not sure if the throw is shorter or not.

If you guys look around on here he posted a link somewhere for all the dimensions all you have to do is print it out and take it to your local machine shop thats what i did but i didnt go thru with it its like 180 bones to get one made cause all the sizes are bastard sizes meaning they arent what most machine shops have so its exspensive to get made...

Looks like the link went bad. Sorry for not noticing it earlier. It's done in Solidworks btw

The design is for the TWM shifter/Ralco shifter only. Anything else would require a complete redesign that I don't have the tools for anymore.

I know this thread is like 2 years old, but just out of curiosity, did anyone else end up getting one of these made so they could use the Ralco/TWM GS Short Shifter on the GT V6? I really like the design and want to put a short shifter in my GT. Anyone use it have any pros, cons, feedback on the thing and how much did it cost to get it made around your neck of the woods?

So I actually took PSY-Q's design to a local CNC shop and got two of them made. One as a spare and the other one I'm going to paint a flat black to match the interior. I like the aluminum finish, but I don't think it will match the rest of my interior since I don't have any aluminum or chrome finishes on anything. Here's the two side by side.
