I bought my 2009 Silver Eclipse GS in early 2010 as a dealer special. It had 318 miles on it at the time. There were eager to get an old model off their lot. The first passenger side profile of the car, below, is a dealer picture. I had no idea what I could do to it and it was a couple of years before I opened the hood and took a serious look. All I knew was it was a drop dead sexy looking car, and it was fun to drive, and not particularly fast. I was (and am) ok with all of that.

It was only intended to be a replacement for my paid-for Chrysler Sebring Sedan, which, at 150k plus miles, I was passing down to our oldest son. The Eclipse was the cheapest car available that I WANTED to own and drive.

First thing I did was order the Sony deck, which tripped my "ECOM" display which I looked at for a couple of years. This community, and a friend who knows a lot more about cars in general, than I do, armed me with the knowledge I needed to confidently get under the hood. I found Club4G.org, I think, because I was looking for a solution to the aftermarket radio "ECOM" display issue.

This is the most I've ever done to any car I've owned. I've never had so much fun with another car. It's the most I've ever planned on doing to a car. The rest is, and will be, eventually, history. I can't call it a "mod", but I've also changed my own timing belt and water pump at 69k miles. It wound up being a two-day project but it was so worth it. Glad it's done.

  • Bypass Valve for CAI - I have an idea for the bypass valve that involves drilling holes in the pipe instead of cutting it in two. Want to maintain the integrity of the pipe.

Wishlist Projects
  • UVTune ECU Reflash
  • Front Bumper re-work. Something satin gunmetal gray with matching gunmetal on the Mitsu logo. Perhaps gloss black on grill. I hate the way the two grill pieces do not match. The top one is mostly cosmetic and the bottom one is mostly functional and NOT cosmetic at all.
  • Steel Brake Lines
  • Retrofit Halos into Stock headlights and paint inside (inside paint = primer gray; halo arms, the three plastic pieces currently holding the "lens" will very likely be a gloss Charcoal Gray)
  • Energy Suspension rear trailing arm bushings
  • Powdercoat valve cover - most likely silver
  • Custom built "Konnersman RAM" air intake

The thought crossed my mind today!

I just grab something that will come off while I'm under there for another reason. Paint it, heat gun it, repeat a few times (poor man's powder coating!) while I'm doing whatever else. Eventually it'll all be done.

Today I was working the radio around. The trim doesn't fit in the dash perfectly, and I found out today that it wasn't the radio's fault. I think the dash itself is a teensy bit warped or bunched around the left top of the trim. I'm working up the courage to attempt (and the time to figure out exactly WHAT) to cut out a small piece of it out with a utility knife (but those get away from me sometimes).

While I was inside the car, I got a good look (and made good progress) on a minor minor mod. The DC accessory plug (I still call it the cigarette lighter even though I don't smoke anymore and there's no coil in the plug OR ashtray in the car). I keep a 2-port Griffin USB charger in it at all times and the dust cover doesn't fit over it. I dremeled out the insides of the dust cover. It now fits over the plug but doesn't stay on it. My plan is to get some large shrink wrap tubing and shrink a layer or two or three around the head of the USB charging plug. That should eventually provide a snug fit.

Unfortunately (fortunately?) I got more nosey and took that whole panel off. It was the first time I've had it out, and I cracked it on the driver's side where the parking brake is. I managed to epoxy the break, but you can still see a seam. I was already thinking of getting one out of an Auto-GT so I could have the factory switches-for the heated seats-to play with for things like a garage door opener, a rear hatch button, or...you know...maybe a heated seat!

I give in, I was going to get the rear anti-sway bar first, but that CAI from DC Sports is beaconing. Hopefully the next pic has the CAI and more orange paint!

Saturday is a SHORT morning in the garage followed by a long day otherwise. Things I'm going to try to get done:
  1. Paint some more under the hood.
  2. Swap spark plugs - 57k on the original NGKs. Just picked up a set of Denso Iridium Power.
  3. Shrink wrap around the head of my Griffin USB charger so the DC ACC dust cover will fit snugly over it.
  4. MIVEC activation light (probably wire this to the LED under the radio)
  5. Maybe a plastidip bat on one of the fenders for Halloween
  6. Clean the glass inside and out

Gonna try to get up early and get it all done!

New Oil Cap day.

Purchased from Ebay seller teroxima for $11.99. This isn't complicated stuff, but I still gave teroxima 5 stars all the way across. I wanted anodized orange, but it's so hard to find something like that that isn't for a motorcycle. So I settled for this "gunmetal" one. I love the name of that color.

Here's the old oil cap:



Here's the new one. A racing oil cap? How many hp do you think I bolted on with this bad boy?


I had to stick a thin screwdriver through the holes to tighten it completely, but the underside of this oil cap matches OEM exactly. It'll work, and it looks a lot better in the process.

If the rear anti-sway bar doesn't show up under the Christmas tree, it'll be a New Year's gift to myself. Too close to Christmas to be buying anything else, especially when my Eclipse wish list is part of my Christmas list.

Exception/Not on the list:An extra valve cover so I can use my car while the best looking of two valve covers gets powdercoated...that's not on my Christmas list.

Another one-off dress-up in the works. Picked up an aluminum fuel filler door from a junkyard for $45 (shipping included). I see they go for about $150 brand new. I'm glad I got this one. I'd be ticked off if I paid $150 for that.

"Really? Instead of an anti-sway bar or steel brake lines, I get this cosmetic, mostly plastic thing that's going to get cancer anyway?"

Cleaning it up is a fun project, in the middle of that right now. Probably going to replace the allen screws in it with something shinier and less..."lived in".

The result of tonight's work. In the morning, when the clearcoat is dry, I'll install it.



Went to the local hardware store to get the "wrench rashed" allen bolts replaced. He didn't have the aluminum ones, and the chrome ones were 3.75 each. Didn't feel like spending over $20 on mostly cosmetic allen bolts. So I went with the much cheaper black ones at 70 cents each.

So the cycle goes: a good amount of goo gone soak; clean; dry; 150 grit sandpaper; 10-15 minutes with a brass brush; clearcoat sealer.

I should have taken a before picture, like i said in previous post, this came out of a junkyard. I have no idea how long it had been sitting there. It had VERY minor gas cap cancer, but overall it was rough. And that's where I am now.

I can't believe they put a coat of gray paint on these, they look far better as bare brushed aluminum with clearcoat.

I had the brilliant idea of filling the letters with gray PlastiDip. That didn't work out so good so I wiped it before it dried. I think I need some painting lessons on tricks like that. That door pops right off if you know where and how to push on it so after install work is definitely possible. Or I could grab some Testors gloss black or gunmetal gray and a small pointed brush and exercise some patience.

Ok, now I'm motivated. Stopping at the hobby store tomorrow on the way home!

Installed! Not bad for an internet junkyard find.



I like the black allen bolts more than the aluminum ones. They are a keeper.

Going to pickup some black and some gray detail paint tonight, and paint those letters!

Getting old. Need to dig out the reading glasses and remove the door again (so I can paint it on a well-lit horizontal flat surface) before I attempt to paint the letters. 10-15 years ago I could have painted those letters while drunk, in a darkly lit room, with one eye closed.

I did my gas cap a few months ago with the blackand it wasn't bad. I ended up taking an old small detail paintbrush with scissors and cut the tip at an angle to get in the crevice. I did overpaint on the cap itself, but I took sandpaper and rubbed it over the surface and it didn't get deep enough in the crevice to take away the balck

here is how it turned out

Next Stage: Rear Anti-Sway Bar

Had a lot of fun last weekend putting the DC Sports CAI on the car. Love the sound and feel. I've promised a "How To" to the community since then. Gotta do that still.

Now that I've got the CAI on, it's time to start planning on the rear anti-sway bar. Here's the plan:

1. Progress 24mm rear anti-sway bar: AutoCity Imports, ~$150 shipped.
2. Energy Suspension Sway bar bushings, $16 direct from Energy.
3. Moog sway bar links. $50-60/pair.

Sounds like fun to me!

This oil cap wasn't air tight out of the package. Had to tighten that screw in the middle.



It's feeling much better now.

Little by little.

I'm in love with the Progress anti-sway bar first. 1 kid in college, 3 at home and the mods budget takes a big hit. Thinking the bar, then the pulley, then start saving for coilovers. If all that gets on the car by this time next year, including oil changes, coolant flush, and the timing belt (odo just clicked over to 60k), call that success!

Another project idea I'm getting antsy to do: Carbon fiber hood (I 100% hate the paint chips in the hood!) with matching vinyl wrap on top. Probably have to do hood struts at the same time, huh?

Can you add it to the 'find something online' thread if you find hood struts for a cf hood? That was the main reason I really drifted away from that one.

This SAYS it will work with any hood (and explicitly lists CF as one). Should I be concerned?
