New Tires - Uniroyal Tiger Paw GTZ All Season

Yet another reason I keep going back to my preferred local garage for stuff I can't do for myself. My preferred tire, the Hankooks, were cupping after less than a year of use. They just replaced all four of them with comparable Uniroyals for nothing, on their 2-yr/24,000 mile full replacement guarantee.
It cost me $0 to drive on those Hankooks for a year. Without discussion, they replaced them with the same size (non-OEM), and comparable model (high performance all-season), the one I would have chosen if we had talked about it.

Have you always had condensation, or was it just recently that you've noticed it? I had noticed some in mine about 2 months ago. Pulled the bulb out of the housing before I went into school, let the sun burn it off during the day, and put the bulb back in. No problems since.
Of course I'm not going to tell you not to get new headlights. We're always looking for excuses to mod, just the wife might not agree with it.

And another thing: Found all a lot of condensation inside my driver's side headlamp. Fortunately it's OEM and now I have an excuse to do something with it, along with a lot of other things since that bumper has to come off to replace the headlamp anyway. =-D
Gotta mull it over...I'll probably get a replacement set from ACI, but I'm not ruling out a bake, open, clean, dry, paint, re-seal party, either. Not sure if I want to do that much work or just spend the jack for Halo lamps and replace my HID bulbs with H1s. I may just do the new halo headlamps and then take my time opening and painting the OEMs.

My Hankooks are going away. They're cupping badly after only a year. I have a 2-yr/24,000 mile free replacement plan at my trusted local garage, so they are getting replaced for free on Tuesday. I certainly don't mind getting a year of tire wear for free. I might have leaned on these a little more if I'd known. In fact, I now have a 3-day weekend to have some FUN!
In addition, my van, also on Hankooks (which aren't in that free replacement window) is getting 4 new tires, because of (can you guess?) --- cupping. I'm not happy about paying to replace those.
After replacing 8 of them in the last 2 weeks for the same problem, I'm never buying another Hankook tire as long as I live.

Originally I was going to install speakers, reinforce the door handles, and paint the swoop part of the door a charcoal gray (much darker than the original gray. For the sake of time, I bailed on the paint, but I did get the speakers and RobZ's handle reinforcements installed.
The speakers, a pair of Kenwood KFC-6993PS, have been sitting in my garage since last summer, when I bought them from Daxenth. They sound incredible. The factory 6x9s are featherweights compared to these. Love them!
It's a shame to hide these behind the factory speaker mesh, they look so nice!
They mount into the factory bracket, but there are two challenges with aftermarket speakers. Challenge Accepted!
The door reinforcement is a badly needed item for our cars, and I was able to get one of the first sets made by RobZ. The difference is night and day. I had the door panel apart for the speakers, so I just re-assembled with the reinforcements instead of the stock screws.
The driver's side handle was cracked in the middle and completely broken in two at the bottom. I epoxied it back together and assembled with the new metal pieces. They'll never break again!

Thanks man! I PMed you more than you probably wanted to know about formatting and charts. To much to dump in my ride thread.
Next with the car, I'm not sure. RobZ's door reinforcement mod (my driver side handle is cracking, and my kid is driving it right now.), new 6x9 speakers, and maybe some paint on the door interior panels. I keep talking about my door project, but I've done nothing on it.
Then window tint. Need to get window tint this summer!
I keep shopping for wheels. I've determined that I am NOT going to replace my wheels unless they are significantly lighter than stock. WHY put heavier wheels on, add to the unsprung weight, slow the car down, cause more wear on the brakes, and give our asthmatic drivetrain more work to do? To that end, Enkei makes some 18" rims that are only 16-17 pounds each that look nice too. At $350 a corner. And since I'm on 17s, I'd be buying tires at the same time. Ugh...

I've learned a bit about brakes. As a result of pulling the back rotors and, for the first time ever, swapping out the rotors & pads, something wasn't right. The brakes were howling like a banshee when I stopped, but only on medium pedal pressure. Light to no pressure, or heavy pressure, no noise at all. I wondered about the parking brake. Maybe I should have replaced the parking brake shoes, too. Maybe that black zinc coating was a BAD idea.
I tried several things, including replacing the parking brake shoes, which wasn't too bad once I figured it out. Until you figure out those drums, it's a son-of-a-bitch. There is a sequence to those brake shoes, it can be easy. I'm pretty sure my body has replaced all the blood I lost -through my busted knuckles- to those drum brakes.
So, with new shoes and a properly adjusted parking brake, I found the problem. I hadn't put anything on the back of the pads where they contact the calipers to prevent vibration. I didn't do that to the fronts when I changed them out. However, the back pads and calipers are a quite a bit smaller than the fronts, and are much more susceptible to vibration, especially when the caliper is slightly engaged, holding them "just so". The pads squealed like a badly played clarinet (and that's not good!).
So I gave it one last ditch effort. I pulled the pads, and I sanded the surface with 150 grit, removing all the black zinc, until I could see the metallic material again. I soaked them in brake parts cleaner. When dry, I applied this:
$6 bottle of "Quiet Brake Juice". Now they are silent as a church mouse.
Lesson of the day: I would still paint the rotors black. But I wouldn't worry about coating the braking surface. And I will use the CRC Disc Brake Quiet from now on, front and back.

My wife has commented that she doesn't like my yellow calipers.
So I showed her a picture of another silver car with yellow calipers.
Her response: "I still don't like it".
Not, "But you don't drive a Porsche", or "But you don't have the ceramic discs indicated by a Porsche with yellow calipers", or "You don't have those Brembos"...
Just, "I still don't like it."
They are staying yellow. :-D

Rear Brakes and new Energy Suspension Sway Bar End Links

Finishing the brake project I started last weekend. I did the fronts last Saturday, the rears today. While I was under there, I replaced the Sway Bar End Links. Getting the old links off was the worst part of today. Anytime I have to get out the PB Blaster, it's bad. Nothing broke other than my skin in a few places, so that's good.
Brakes before and after pics. About the only things worth looking at in this pic are my Eibach Springs and Progress Sway Bar.
I sprayed the calipers with brake parts cleaner, scrubbed them with a wire brush. When they were dry, I hit them with 3-4 coats of Duplicolor yellow engine enamel. The before and after pics here are of the SAME calipers. The only things I switched out were the disc, pads, and sway bar end link.
The links, they are about 3/8" longer than stock. I didn't cut them, I just set them as short as they would go, and put them on. There's clearance for it. These things are meaty compared to stock.
For reference. no, I didn't get the orange bushings. Pigs wanted more money for those.

Slotted and Drilled Rotors

I got a set of Power Stop drilled & slotted rotors with ceramic pads from Daniyair before he checked out here. I finally put them on the front. Look at how much I beat the old rotor to get it to come off the hub. Original rotor, 83k miles. Man, that thing was stubborn.
After cleaning thoroughly with brake parts cleaners, I spray painted the discs with this:
Eastwood Zinc Phosphate Aerosol
One can was plenty to put a few coats on all four discs.
I also painted the front side of the pads with Aluminum color engine enamel.
The finished product with the wheel on.
As expected (this happens with the EBC rotors that are zinc treated too), the zinc-coat scrapes off after very little braking. It should stay on everywhere else.
Next weekend (hopefully) - I do the rear brakes. I'll get to the sway bar end links at the same time.

Oh I know that feeling really well actually. I was just curious about them if they do work because I have a Progress rear sway on its way and I know the end links become a concern as the weak point.
EDIT: Have you tried disassembling them at all? I know it had been brought up to saw off some of the threads to see if that would be a viable solution, but by look at photos of the links wouldn't you also run into the casing still being too long? My reasoning is that you would not only have to cut off about a half inch of the threads, but the exterior casing as well. I'm at the point where I think I'm going to order them and find a way to make them work.

Years of working in autobody/full service shops have made me a little jaded to some types of mods people do to their rides, ESPECIALLY in the Lone Star State where there is more Krylon paintjobs than any other state.. but, I have to admit, you have a great eye for detail and your commitment to showing off and recording the mods on here, is a testement to taste and refinement. Wonderful job, keep up the great work, and last but not least, ENJOY it! You have definitely earned it. Awesome!

I like my 35W 6000K Hi/Lo HID lights better than the stock incandescent bulbs. However, it's time to go whiter and brighter. Just ordered another kit from DDM Tuning: 55W 5000K Hi/Lo.
It's cheaper by about $13 to order another kit than to order bulbs and ballasts separate.

Painted Front Brake Calipers

This is a good use of vacation time. A $10 rattle can of Duplicolor Yellow Engine Enamel. I pulled the brackets. I wished I had a proper parts cleaning bench. Wire brush, drip pan, and brake cleaner was a decent substitute. I cleaned and air-dried the brackets, then sprayed the engine enamel directly on them. This is at least 4 coats of it.
I did the same thing with the calipers, but I did not remove them from the car. I hung them from the spring with safety wire, scrubbed them down, taped them off, and sprayed them.
The finished product:
If the Duplicolor holds up to the brake dust, I'll use the rest of the can on the rears in a month or so.

Matched Vinyl Eyelids

This was fun and quick. I ordered a 1' x 4' sheet of:
3M GLOSS White Aluminum G120 Scotchprint Car Wrap Vinyl Film 1080 Series
Took less than a half hour. I can't believe how well this vinyl matches the A33 paint color. It is very close to the same shade, and has the same granular metallic finish. Nice. I used 18" of a 4' roll to do this. $17 for eyelids, zero fitment issues, and I have 5/8 of the roll left.

|eosrebel||Places like that are exceedingly hard to find nowadays. That's three separate opportunities for them to charge you more money, but opted to not nickel and dime you to keep you coming back. They sound a lot like the place I go to, where they spent six hours diagnosing why the electronics in my Jeep were going haywire on the right side, didn't charge me anything for it and gave me an alternative solution, with a substantial guarantee that it will work, when the cost to replace the faulty part was more than the vehicle was worth. Gotta love good shops, I'm glad you've found one.|

Minor update. Today I painted the rear Mitsu logo with Duplicolor Shadow. I may just not have the hang of the Shadow treatment, but I can't see why I would go through all this trouble to paint something (a few coats of color followed by a few coats of clear) when What it comes out as is "gloss black". Why not just shoot it with gloss black? Anyway, I don't hate the result, and it is definitely an improvement.
I'm also buying tires in the next couple of weeks. Going with 4 of these: Hankook Ventus V4 ES H105 (1005995). I am WAY overdue and I need to replace them before my trip to Chicago in August.
And I'm bumping the width and diameter from stock: 235/50R17.

Priced 30% window tint today. Local place that does nothing but that. $149 with lifetime guarantee. Done in 90 minutes with an appointment. He said, "you can either have 30% which is totally legal, or the 20%".
I was like, "Yeah...we're going to be completely legal when we're done". The tint is going to cost me $149 and NO more than that. =-D I'm excited!
I love it when mileage reimbursement pays for stuff like this.
