but yea i would love to see it done and even with no reinforcements it would still handle better then a downed spyder, due to the fact it still has solid bracing over the rear seats and rear window .convertibles are nice but twist . someone please grab a saw and show us =)

i agree. vert would be way to much modding. just choppin a coupe would be so much easier. i have a shop here that will do it. im gonna go ask tomorrow what the best course of action would be.

If you feel like welding a structure and fitting it under your interior panals then it could be done. Put a full cage, nothing big, like a 4 or 6 point and it should help out the structure.
But a simple 4 point bolt in your looking at just a grand right there. They dont make a cage for our car, ive talked to a shop about getting one made, they said 900 and thats just labor and material building it, thats not install

i think we need to look at the supra and see what they did to reinforce everything. they dont have roll cages and there good. might be an easier way to go then roll cages and everything.

when the 350z guys did it, I believe they used door reinforcements, and shit like ladder bracers.. thats why I also mentioned T-tops as an option...
actually let me see if I can find it, but there used to be a kit for mustangs.. like a full on kit.. had all the shit you needed to convert to targa

Quote:
When cutting the roof off to convert, do not cut them straight throgh the pilars & sail panels. Make sure you brace the body of the car you are converting. Meaning welding braces in & across the inside od the car. I would weld up a good set of SFC's also. Both roofs will have to be cut the same exact locations. Ive been thinking about this fot awhile my self. Camaro & Firebirds are interchangeable if you were wondering.
and check this thread My T-Top conversion is DONE!! She's Topless! - LS1TECH

hey Kaylan...
not trying to be a dick or take Isamu's side, but fuck already, take that shit to OT if you're gonna pollute this f'in thread with your shit.
you dont like Isamu, fine, who f'in cares?
there's a section for that, it's called "Off-Topic"... create your own thread for all i care "Isamu is a troll" and let everyone chimes in...

but in this thread, as far as i can tell, Isamu is the one bringing ideas to the table where you're just stirring shit up for no fuckin' reason.

cheers.

sorry for the OT guys. a coupe is the obvious start point on this, and yes, a T-Top will give you extra reinforcement in the middle of the roof.

Why not use a brace like the convertible Cobras and Saleens in the 99-04 model mustangs right behind the front seats!

Are those actually a brace or just a roll bar for safety?

Probably just for safety on those but titanium or cast steel should be fine for rigidity in a unibody car

we need to get in touch with people who have chopped the top off their 240's and all and see what exactly they did. Theres a guy that cruises our city with a 240 he made into a convertable but i havnt seen him in a few weeks. I like this idea, we can do alot of resource for this, but who will actually have the balls to cut their 4G up? i dont

Yeah that's gonna take some balls and a lot of work. I almost thought about trying to make some sort of roll bar like the mustangs had for my Spyder. I'm just wondering where I could attach it and such.

they brace into the floor and side wall I would assume.. but you would have to look online and see if you can find install instructions.

It might be something to look into. I have a friend of the family that has a machine shop that could take some measurements and maybe make something for me then I can add some mesh fabric and make it a functional wind deflector too. Would be cool to add a speaker and maybe add a 3rd brake light into it all well.

Just out of curiosity....what happens to a targa top or even our spyders when involved in a roll accident? Lets say the top was up for arguments sake....so....would you guys survive?

I often wonder the same thing. I don't think the bows in the top would support the weight of the car. This is a video of a rolled 3g spyder.

Yeah so that's why I think some sort of roll bar behind the front seat would be kind of cool and add a little more safety.

a targa/t top while not AS supportive as a full roof, survives pretty well. you just have to reinforce the parts that will sustain the hit, and support the weight

They make roll bars for the first 3 generation of eclipse but nothing for the 4G. You can get a custom roll bar made and installed for about 1k. After seeing that video its worth it. If i were to cut my top, a 4 point would be going in my car

hahah yes but i plan i not being stuck there forever like everyone else... even though i just found out i am coded.... staying there until i get 7 level.... or out... or guard in december !!! lol i came up there with a g6 gt hardtop convert. i had the top down those whole two months of 'summer' then sold it to somebody because of issues.

but if i do this i would leave the center support kind of like the tranny up there. it would just look so cool.

or i might get a dif car. . . so many thoughts idk! i just get bored with my cars real fast.
