Door Latch Replacement

Greetings all new here - just bought a 2006 GT/manual. Absolutely love it! It came with a new driver's side door latch - owner said it needed it for the power lock to work.

Is there a good write-up here for ripping into that door panel? Lots of bolts! LOL...

I've been searching for a while. Could use a nudge in the right direction. Thanks!

Joe

I've had the plastic off and speaker out. Need a guide to removing the inner skin with all the bolts around the perimeter without screwing up the window....

It's the door latch itself - the part that holds the door closed (and contains the locking mechanism). Three torx bolts hold it but the inner door skin looks like it has to come off to remove it.....
I just don't wanna mess up the window!

Removing the window isn't a big deal at all, if you even have to. If you're not removing the window rails or regulator, it shouldn't make any difference. Just leave it rolled up.

If you want to remove those too, just grab the glass and walk away with it once those are undone

I just want to change the latch. Shouldn't have to remove the glass to do this. Just thought someone might know which bolts need to come out and which ones don't.

It's a tough one, because we'd tell you "the ones that hold the latch in". How you find out is by looking at which ones hold it in, unfortunately, once things are apart. Pull the inner door skin, the guide for changing speakers should have all the instructions. Elsewise, you remove the screw in the vent, the bolts for the door pull, and there may be others, but all that comes to mind beyond that is to take a trim removal tool (optimally) or any prying tool and pop the door plastic skin off, undo the plugs for the window and lock mechanisms, and you should be able to access everything

Thought I'd drop a note here cuz I finally got it done! And there doesn't seem to be much info out there about this problem.

Once again, the electric locking mechanism wasn't working with the button on the key, requiring door latch replacement. A new OEM part came with the car when I bought it.

I removed the inner door panel and speaker. Removed all 10mm bolts (I believe 12) around the perimeter of the inner door skin. On the rubber door seal, pry out the top two rivets on each end of the seal (these were quite user friendly - a flathead screwdriver works).

I removed a couple 13mm bolts also until i saw the window start to move around inside the door. I never actually removed the window, just shifted it giving myself room to work.

Next I removed the (keyhole) lock from the door by releasing the horse-shoe clip (careful not to lose this thing - it knows how to hide!)

--Remove the three torx bolts that hold the latch in the door - the latch should be moving around by now.

The new latch came with linkage that I wound removing and using the link from the old latch. It seemed easier to disconnect the link and leave it in the door- it unlocks easily with your fingers.

There are two electrical plugs, one on top and one on bottom, that need to be pinched to release. This was probably the worst part - if the glass was out it would have been easier.

I then snuck the old latch out of the speaker hole and popped in the new one the same way. Again kind of tricky getting the plugs hooked up but it can be done!

Now the lock works 100% - hope I never have to do it again!
