HOW TO = Dash Peeling = FIX (aka banana dash, aka viagra dash)

Hey Everyone

I know a lot of us have this issue, Ive been dealing with it for a while now too. My dash wont stay down at all. If I tuck it in, it pops right back out.

Heres mine...
The dash sticking up is very noticeable when approaching the vehicle.

view from passenger seat...
Cant even see the airbag!

I've tried multiple things, double sided stickey tape, double sided velcro tape,etc...
Ive searched the net for fixes and only come up with people glueing it down, only to find out the heat eventually makes it let go again and your left with glue residue showing. So if you want to re-glue, you have old glue in the way,etc....Its just a mess....

Heres my solution, I think its worthy and better then anything Ive tried or read about yet. No glue, it dosent hurt and only takes about 5-10 min...

Heres what were going to do.
Get some of this...
Its called " Textured Rubber Edge Trim WITH Metal Core". (its used for the edge of things like sheet metal)
NOTE= you want the one with "metal core". (so you can crimp/clamp it to the foam of dash, places like autozone/home depot just have the plastic stuff without metal core.)
heres a link to it with exact dimensions of it and a tech diagram...

McMaster-Carr
McMaster-Carr supplies products used to maintain manufacturing plants and large commercial facilities worldwide.

If the above link dosent work, its ITEM # 8451A13 from McMaster.com
(you can get it in Black Or White)
$1.16 a foot, but min 10 ft order...
You may need a business account to order from them, but you can get the dimensions from there and find it online somewhere else.

Now we have it, this is what were working with... (The black piece on the post -it note...The red piece and big metal piece were other ideas I came up with that got me on the right track. )
(This is a small piece I cut off for testing and to show you guys.)

showing you the "rubber teeth", to grip the foam dash...

showing what were going to do with it...

Now were going to test fit and see how long we want to make our piece.
I chose to go about 4 inches or so past the air bag on each side...This will be whats holding the dash down...
The Rubber Edge Trim fits good/somewhat loose under the air bag, no pressure to the airbag cover... and it barely fits under the dash part on each side, so well just crimp it more around those areas...

This is perfect cause we can adjust the Rubber Edge Trim by crimping it more or less...and its textured rubber, so it has grip....the foam has no grip... It also has rubber teeth on the inside to grab the foam dash along with the metal inside so it shouldnt let go. Itll hold up against the heat too...

Heres the piece cut to the length I want... I poped out the metal ends so they dont show and so I could get a nice straight cut.
(the metal core, is similar to staples, so itll bend...and theres a tiny gap between them, so you can pop out a little piece, so you dont have metal showing on the ends... you can see one of these metal ends on the post it note, just under the black rubber piece in the 4th pic of this post.)

Now you want to open the Rubber Trim a little bit, not too much, just enough to go around/over the little lip of the foam dash...

All opened up, ready to be put on foam dash.

Here it is crimped and ready to be pushed back in...
( DO NOT crimp it too hard.....you can crimp more if you need, but start out gently...You WANT it to fit snug...... you DONT want to crimp too much...)
Notice we added about 1/4 inch to the foam dash...now itll stay tucked in and fit snug. : )

NOTE ***PLEASE BE CAREFULL when pushing it back in, your AIRBAG is right there!! DO NOT pound on it.!!
You should be fine, just be cautious and aware that your AIRBAG is right there. Just push it in firmly...No need to take a hammer to it or anything drastic...
( I am NOT responsible if you set your airbag off for some reason.)

Here it is pushed in...

(the cam really picks it up, its not that noticeable in person... You cant really see it uness you look for it.)

Heres another angle..

another angle

another angle

DONE

There's the air bag! Now we can see it.= D

I've had it installed for about 1 week now on the passenger side and the dash has NOT poped out yet...or even budged. : )

This was my test piece, I've had it installed on the drivers side for about 1.5 weeks and it hasent budged either. : )
( I just did a small piece for testing and so I didnt have to peel up the dash anymore then it was...This section poped out the worst and would not stay down no matter what I did. I think cause its on the corner of the dash, with the sharper curve.)
You can barely see the little strip I have there, you have to look for it.

I hope it helps you guys. : )

Please feel free to post this in the other clubs and facebook club.

Also, I have about 6ft of the stuff left, so if your a current customer of mine and want to try this, let me know and I'll throw a piece of it in with your order. ; )

If any of you have trouble finding some of this stuff, let me know, I'll try to help you out. : )
(but fyi-itll cost me more to ship it to you then the actual piece. So you may just want to order your own...if your in the process of ordering from me, youve already paid shipping, so I can just throw it in with your order. ; )

I'll update this as time goes on but I think this is going to work great for a lot of us.
My dash should have poped out by now, its even been in the 80's-90's and it still hasent budged. = )

Let me know what you guys think....

Just wanted to give you a +1 for this. New 2012 Eclipse Owner and I bought the car and saw this on the lot, but tucked it back in and it looked ok. Have had it pop out a couple times in the first few months I've owned this so I was looking for a more permanent solution. Was going to take it to the dealer to see what they said - but have gone ahead and ordered 10ft of the material you listed and will likely just use your fix. Can't believe if it's as common as it seems that Mitsubishi hasn't come up with a permanent fix - along the lines of what you did.

Anyway, kudos for taking the time and effort to a) figure out a solution and b) post the how to.

Assume it's still holding strong?

Wrong Part Number

Ordered 8451A13 from McMaster

McMaster-Carr

And think you have the wrong item. Can you please confirm? There is no way 8451A13 will fit in the dash as the top is 1/2 inch wide.

Did you mean 8451A11 instead which has a top of 9/32? OR 8451A12 with a top of 25/64?

Help?

This is the product I used: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It worked perfectly so far, not even a sign of it coming out again. Since the smallest size to order from Amazon is 25 feet, I have a ton left over. Just send me a private message if anyone else wants to do this and I'll mail the rest to you.

Sorry for the confusion guys...
Heres some pics of the stuff I used held up to a ruler....

Bottom side/opening

(its roughly 1/4 x 1/2 inch...you could prob get away with anything close to that.)

I still have some if anyone needs it...Just pay shipping and I'll send you a strip the size I used...

If theres a bunch of you, and you want to get it in smaller quantities then they sell online, I'll order a bunch of it and sell it in smaller rolls if it helps you guys... let me know...Hope it helps. : )

It just helps the rubber keep its shape and so when you crimp it, it stays...if the metal wasnt in it, you wouldnt be able to crimp it...

Hah! I moved at the end of the year and am just now coming back to this. I'm now in a warmer climate in South Carolina, and as you can imagine, that means the banana peel is pulling out multiple times a week. Driving me insane.

Private messaged you guys - hoping one can ship me some. If I don't hear back by late week, I'll go the amazon route. They have it for 15% off right now which means $18.

Sounds like a deal to fix a PITA problem on an otherwise awesome car.

I fixed mine by peeling it off lower down, super glueing the top trim and shoving it down where it needs to go. After the superglue cured, I used spray glue on the rest of the pad and stuck it down. Loctite 404 held very nicely.

Hey All, does anyone have extra Textured Rubber Edge Trim WITH Metal Core they would be willing to sell to me or help point me in the way of which one on Amazon is correct? I looked on Amazon but was unable to find the piece with the exact dimensions. Please DM me if you have a piece for sale. I live in the NY Westchester county area if there is a local.

Thanks!

Should have been a NTSB recall, but it ain't

This should have been a NTSB recall since it involves the airbag. I'll be fixing mine soon however I safely can. But the last thing a person needs is for metal and other stuff being deployed along with the airbag should someone pull out in front of you.

I agree but heard glue does not last and it looks terrible when it's half peeled. Does anyone have a piece or point me in the correct direction on Amazon for the correct item I should buy to fix the dash?

My passenger side did finally pop out after the car sat all winter.

I pushed it back in and it was fine all summer, till last week when it almost hit 100 degrees here. It popped back out again. ( the car sat for a week in the heat)

Its been staying in since then.

So this is not a permanent solution I guess.

Its just a way better/easier then haveing to push it back in everyday or leaving it hanging out.

My driver side has not budged this hole time. (with just that little 1 inch piece)

maybe I'll try re-crimping my passenger side to see if I can make it stay.

I still have some leftover if someone needs it.

Did the insert come free of the trim piece you added or did the whole trim piece pop out of the slot on the dashboard?

the whole trim piece popped out of the slot on the dash.

The piece I crimped on is still attached to the foam/leather.

I still have some leftover if someone needs it.

still have any left man???

How do you crimp the trim? Everytime I tried crimping it lightly to hard and the trim does not stay on the dash foam. Any tips? Thx

I just put a steady stream of super glue on the passenger side dash piece lip and then stuck it down into the hole where it’s supposed to be and held the whole thing I’m there for a few minutes and it’s stayed for like 2 years now with no problems

Super glued the foam to hard dash or super glued the molding to foam dash?

Was thinking to glue the trim to edge and also glue the foam dash either was super glue, epoxy, or some commercial glue for vinyl flooring. Plastic on foam if a bit trial and error to know what really works. Any specific glue that worked good?
