4GMR2 Build

What's the Eclipse missing? Traction, power at the rear, and weight balance.

So here's the build thread to focus on my 4G, mid engine, rear drive 2 seater build. 4GMR2. Sorry Toyota.

The car started life with Plain Jane around here, but after an unfortunate incident at the track which may or may not have been related to running 5W-20 while racing (don't do it), the engine decided it had enough of living. Plane Jane had life in the way, and so the car needed a new home. So I took over.

Credit where it's due, here's his build thread.

It was a sad day for Plane Jane, and a day with mixed feelings for me, taking over a friend's car. I still have a hard time referring to it as anything but his.
Here it was, leaving to a new life.

This is where I took over. The end of his build thread, minus a good engine. The cylinder walls are scored, the bearings are shot. It has no oil pressure.

Quickly, it found space with a friend nearby

And had fun watching the stripper take it all off

Then getting forked out in the parking lot

But here's where the car sits now.

Today was a productive day, with the seats coming out, gas tank, fuel straps, seats, some trim, center console, rear subframe, evap components, fuel filler neck, the wrappers of 3 Cliff bars, and some other stuff, such as the mouse poop from 3 Cliff bars which I may have been rolling around in (hint: yeah I was before I knew it was there)

So, next up, I've got to pick up some blades, and I'll be cutting out the rear end sheet metal. Everything between the frame rails is coming out.

It sounds like something that could be fixed with some clever aero and ducting, as well as maybe oil and trans coolers. There's always everyone's favorite option, roof scoop. Lol

Or using the rear windows as intake vents like those scoops some classic mustangs have?

Either way, super cool idea!
Roof scoop unfortunately doesn't work on an Eclipse as an inlet. Roof is all low pressure zone. That's why they're not very common on cars that aren't designed from the ground up to use one. Usually you need a narrow cockpit with sloped sides to prevent the airflow deflection at the windshield.

Oil cooler will help, for sure. Trans cooler, not so much a need on a manual.

The rear windows don't work as inlets either unfortunately, that's why I've got the side pod intakes where I do.

Building out a wider skirt would work, but then there's the problem of the frame rails existing, so the skirt would have to flare upwards into a widebody rear arch to get around the sills.

There aren't really a lot of good options. Most will either just stall air, or make it move the wrong way and just add drag.

This has been on my mind a lot. If you ever wanna toss ideas around lemme know. 🙂

Whichever part of the message jumped out to you, I've probably already put some thought into it even if not developed. Feel free to PM to discuss
This is so damn cool bro, I’d be very impressed if you could pull this off. Has there been any progress over the last couple years?

Yeah, I'd been driving it for quite some time. It's running fine, I'm looking to drag race it soon.

It's lowered again now as well and I'm unlikely to lift it again. There just aren't enough snowy days to justify the effort and re-aligning everything. There wasn't even a snow-cross event this last winter

Yeah, there's several in this thread. Go back one page and you'll see one after I wax coated the frame
Dude that’s beautiful. I just woke up and decided to look around the forum and found this and I want to do it so bad 😂

Thank you! I just did new exhaust tips on it yesterday as well, and straightened out the exhaust. Also, it has a new shifter bracket and bangs gears much better. And did some general maintenance fixes, like a new vacuum line for my fuel pressure regulator, better grounding... Just some things I'd been putting off.

Did a little more bumper trimming... I need to grind down the bar behind the bumper a bit more for a matched fit. But it's a lot cleaner a line on the plastic now.

My concern with is is whether or not such a setup would have any kind of moisture issue in the rigid foam area, or if the added insulation would in some way make the shingles too hot. A thought I had would be to put down purlins to create a air gap. But I don't know if that is necessary.

Wow, this is my favourite ever spam bot. I don't even want to delete it. Boy was that a swing and a miss from the web crawler. Probably was the expanding foam which triggered it
