The timing belt wouldnt fail while sitting, but likely would while cranking to start up again. Typically people around here notice the change in sound when it snaps.
If I heard it, I could almost definitely tell you if the timing belt went. Else, it's just a few timing cover bolts to get yourself a 100% confident answer on that. When I asked about the history, timing belt maintenance is the main thing I was suspecting had been skipped. Compression was for timing or warped motor mating surfaces.
