Hello,

I have a 2006 Eclipse GT with the check engine soon light on. My mechanic says it's an EVAP code and he has run 3 smoke tests without finding anything and can't figure out what is causing the code. I have replaced the gas cap with a new oem one which also didn't fix it. A friend of mine had the same issue and told me the only way he was able to get it fixed was at the Mitsubishi dealership. Anyone have any experience with this and found a fix other than the dealership or does anyone know how much that would end up costing me at the dealership?

Do you know which evap code? Are you the sort of guy who likes to top off the tank after the pump auto stops?

It is EVAP code P0442. I don't top off...

Excellent. So it's a small leak code, and could be something easily missed in smoke testing.

Is there any difficulty starting, noticable fuel economy loss, noticable power loss, gasoline smell when parked, or rough idle?

One thought that comes to mind is a leaking evap solenoid. It would present itself as a vacuum leak, and wouldn't be visible under smoke testing unless it were disconnected and actually checked itself
