Just started happening. Hit a bump (because california roads are garbage, and not a big bump either) and my engine light turned on. Turned off the music and listened for a bit. Nothing wrong while moving. Stopped at a stoplight and once I started moving I heard this almost ropey light grinding sound. But not like grinding gears sound.
There's a million generic misnamed clutch problem threads, I looked at a lot, but not all. So sorry if this has been answered before.
Another thing, I have the mindset that if something goes bad, replace it with something better. If it turned out I needed a new clutch or flywheel what would be a good replacement?
Edit: now the sound is happening even when the clutch is disengaged. Especially at low rpm. Also, when I start my car it goes straight to 1500 rpms. Is that normal?
how many miles do you have? the reason i ask is i had an issue which i think may be the same as yours and its some pretty bad shit. is the noise kind of like a muffled really quiet pebbles in a clothes dryer kind of noise? and does your tranny whine at all when you accelerate? i got a noise like that, then it progressed to a whine in the tranny and i took it in.... tranny was shot (input shaft bearing) they replaced the whole thing under warranty... i was at 97k. if you are lucky to get it fixed under warranty you can get a nice clutch too and they will only charge like 100 bucks for the install because the tranny has to come off anyways. i got a stage 3 6 puck from ACT and a fidanza flywheel to throw in there, but if you plan on leaving it near stock power wise id just get like a nicer organic street disc.
about 68,000 miles. it does sound like a bearing. its definitely a spinning or moving part. i got the extended warranty so it should be covered. would that make the engine light go on though?
It's all stock right now, except for audio. I just got it in may. So I haven't had a whole lot of chances to fit it with aftermarket parts, but it's in the works. I might just buy nice clutch and flywheel and hang on to it for a while. And get as many miles as I can out of the one I have. My wife will be driving the car soon too. And she's new to a manual tranny. So maybe it's better to wait to replace it.
More than anything It's probably the bearing. It almost sounds like spinning the wheels on a skateboard. No whining yet. But the pebbles in the dryer is pretty accurate.
If I drive on a bad clutch is it going to hurt anything else in the car?
the engine light was probably a coincidence. these cars are so finicky even bone stock you might throw a light every once in a while. and no its not gonna hurt anything. if the bearing is going bad you will eventually get extra play and noise in your gears like i did and they will be forced to give you a new transmission.... provided you actually got your gear oil flushed when they recommended
So the engine light has nothing to do with the clutch? Now I gotta figure out what that's about. Probably something stupid. Usually is. I stopped by autozone, they don't help you troubleshoot and give you the code anymore. Was like wtf.
Take your car in ASAP for the grinding noise. I just got raped by the dealer. two weeks ago i heard the same grinding noise coming from my clutch/tranny area. i waited 2 weeks before i took it in. They thought the grinding noise was only because my throwout bearing went bad. The throwout bearing rides on the shaft that goes from the flywheel into the bell housing. They replaced the bearing and a seal on the shaft that the bearing rides on. They put on a new clutch and turned the flywheel which were both the original. When they were done there was STILL a grinding noise coming from deeper in the trans. long story short waiting caused possible gears in the tranny to become damaged and there might be another 4 bearings bad in the trans. Bullshit part is that i have 115,300 miles on the car (70% of those miles are freeway miles since i commute to LA everyday). so it was out of warranty. They priced me on new trans which is 3100 and a used 1 year warranty trans for 2400. So i just spent $1200 for the work they did and didnt get the problem fixed fully. Very PISSED that im having this problem with the car already! WTF MItSUBISHI! :noplease:
uh oh. I just bought the car in may. so if something like that is going on. and the brakes went bad less than a month after i bought it too. there's gotta be something i can do. because that would be some major bullshit if the dealer pulled that kind of crap.
im taking it back monday to get looked at. and ill make sure they do a full look at both the clutch and the transmission. if its fucked up and they try to screw me. im gonna go ape shit.
this is beginning to seem like a common problem with gs's... that makes 3 people now on this forum who have experienced this issue... all right around or before 100k... maybe some trans's with lemon bearings got put a bunch of cars? i feel so lucky they covered mine under warranty now...
Yeah this does seem like its becoming a common problem. It sucks so bad that im 15k out of warranty and all the money is coming out of my pocket... I wonder what shitty bearings they use? I wont be buying Mitsu again. On the other hand I guess I should'nt have expected much more from a $18k vehicle that in 4 years is only worth $8k or less lol
luckily i bought the extended warranty when i bought the car. whats shitty is that i just bought it in may. need new brakes, clutch, tranny. WTFFFFF!?!?!
That sound could either just be your clutch against the flywheel chattering (which can sound grindish) or it is the throwout bearing. Just hope it's not the throwout bearing cause they're about 135 bucks to buy one, and the whole transmission HAS to come off to change it.
Trust me, I've done it, and it's not a fun job. I'm sure since you have a GS it's a 5 speed so the box is a little lighter, but still ackward.
Hey babysealboots, this is musicpimp from socal4g.com.
Worst case scenario is ChaseMe's case. We probably have a similar noise; I have a GT though. I always thought it was normal, then MitEclipse07 asked me what the noise was and I told him that it always did that. I was using 87 octane gas, so we figured that my engine was knocking. Switched to 91, and it was still doing the same. Another member of socal4g (depridation) mentioned my clutch. Got it checked out, and it turns out that my clutch is starting to go out.
SO, that's probably the case. Or at least hope so anyway, because its much cheaper than a tranny. And besides, a stage 2 clutch is sweet
Edit: And by going out, I mean that it's been used and abused
One thing you also have to think about is the 4cyl has a sprung hub with a solid single mass flywheel. The 6cyl has an unsprung hub with a dual mass flywheel. Your noise was straight up clutch going out. Another noise that is common with dual mass flywheels is a slight grinding sound due to the two disks on the flywheel doing their normal thing. Also...if you're doing the clutch man you just had well go big or go home. Go with the highest stage streetable clutch for the power you think you'll be putting down at least a year or more from now. Changing clutches isn't fun...
I'll definitely check it out. The sound hasn't bothered me for a few days now. Strange. It worried me because it started when the engine light came on. I didn't realize the two were unrelated.
I'm going to get a nice clutch and wait to see what happens with mine. I have to teach my wife to drive stick in about a month. And new clutch + new driver = not so new clutch. If I need a new transmission. Well I'll be out 50 dollars and a warranty.
As far as the engine light goes. It's either something I scraped or bumped on the bottom of the car under the engine block area, or my amplifier asserted it's authority over some of my electronics. I've had some bass drops that have almost made my lights turn off.
It's my exhaust rattling Problem is unrelated to my clutch. I put the car on a lift while it was running (I know, I know, that's a no-no), and saw that it's my exhaust rattling against the frame. I'll show you on Saturday Don't mind me babysealboots, I'm an idiot.
well here is a little follow up from my situation. I have the tranny out of my car right now and it looks like the front bearing is bad. I havent cracked the tranny open yet but from turning the shaft thats what it sounds like. Hopefully there isnt more problems when i open it up. Im not quite sure how to open it. I have the CV joints out and I think i need to take the bell housing off first before it will crack open. If anybody knows PLEASE let me know. Also does anyone know where I can download a full manual for a 2007 GS?
so it might be about that time. let the wife drive today to the store and back. on the way there was great. a little jerky but nothing crazy. on the way back was terrible. grinded the reverse gear for a second while parking, and taking the turn up a steep hill i told her to go into 2nd to climb the hill. only problem is she almost came to a stop and then into 2nd. and the car was revving as loud as if it were being floored.
when we got back. it was smelling funny. kinda like a burnt rubber/fluid smell. i just want it to survive a little bit longer. the sound i mentioned is happening more often. and its getting harder to shift into gears. especially reverse. R only wants to shift halfway half of the time. or barely at all.
Well I am only at about 45k so hopefully my car holds on a while before anything like this happens because I just dumped a ton of money into a turbo build. And I doubt they will cover a clutch under warranty with a turbo on that bad lad
OMFG WTF!!!! took it to a place. took em 3 days to fucking put in a new clutch. and they put it in wrong. now i have a brand new clutch that still smells like shit with a bad throwout bearing (makes an eeeeeehhhhhhh noise everytime i push in the pedal). I'm about to nerdrage here. Someone bring me a beer?
