I have a 2007 Eclipse GT 6cyl 6 speed that I race on a road course, as of now the car is stock but I will be adding a cold air intake and cat back exhaust, the clutch I have is stock and I can smell it when I get off the track. My question is, can I go with a Stage 2 or a stage 3 clutch without compromising my transmission or CV joints?
Thanks
there's no point unless you're making more power...and a cold air and exhaust won't make nearly enough power to justify even a stage 2...also are you sure it's not your brakes? cause they smell very similar...but if you're like me, and you can tell the difference, then get whatever you want...but I can tell you from experience, even a stage 2 sprung 6-puck (my current clutch) is quite aggressive...Also, I drove a car with a stage 3 unsprung 4 puck, and it was awesome, but the clutch was not forgiving at all, and would not be good for a daily driver.
my first performance clutch was a stage 1 HD pressure plate with a standard sprung organic street disc, and it was nice...quite a bit stiffer than OEM, but was as forgiving as OEM...as soon as you move to stage 2 you're looking at other friction materials, and slipping the clutch becomes a thing of the past, and you feel like you're learning how to drive again for the first time, lol
any clutch disc with a sprung hub, should spare your transmission and axles of huge instantaneous torque loads. if you're planning on increasing torque output by say 0-30% get stage 1 (full bolt-on and/or small nitrous shot). if you plan on turbocharging, supercharging, or big nitrous shots, you'll want AT LEAST a stage 2 for peace of mind. if you build the motor for high boost stage 3 may be required, depending on your torque output...and by that time you'll be looking at custom axles, and you'll have a spare tranny set aside...
Thanks for the comeback. The car is fine on the street but at the track after a couple of sessions the clutch starts to slip, for example I’m in fourth gear at 95mph when I go to fifth it takes about 2 seconds to engage. When I go into a tight corner and down shift, coming out on acceleration it takes about 1.5 to fully engage.
Is a stage 1 more aggressive then stock?
