Welcome to Club4g, but this is for the 4G Eclipse, not Mirage.

Being a 4G## series motor though, it's quite similar to the 4 cyl engines in 90s/2000s Eclipse, Lancers, and Galants, however. The most common failures are caused by lack of maintenance or poor maintenance. Timing belts are something to be particularly worried about, as if they get old, they can snap, causing engine failure. But that's not unique to these cars by any means.

Thanks to everyone that contributed - Here is the craigslist post - ADMIN DELETE

after my initial physical examination, I was able to run a VIN check to actually see if I had missed anything.

It was eye opening to see that the vehicle had actually being rebuilt and had been in serious damage before. The report also showed photos of the previous damage.

With this information I was able to avoid buying a vehicle with bad previous history
