whats up guys im new up in this place.. i took a look at some of your rides throughout the page, pretty damn sweet!
but i have a problem which is why i am here asking for some advice if possible please
i have a 3gen eclipse 2001 gt...for some reason when i accelerate my engine makes (what i describe) a hollow sound, or more like a sewing machine noise.. not sure what could be the problem.. i know when i got my fuel system cleaned up it went away for a few days then came back.. and well i know my clutch needs to be fixed soon as well cause when i let go of my pedal it makes a small grinding noise, or when i accelerate in gear as well.. dont know if the two things are related?
please let me know what you think.. anything will help before i start dumping loads of money i dont have
the grinding was the only thing that I thought would be a sign of a clutch going bad.. well.. however, I'm no mechanic. Never heard a car sound like a sewing machine before though  Hope you get it fixed soon.
thank you very much for your input.. im going to have it checked out .. im praying to God that i dont have to spend a lot of money .. cause money is always an issue
my truck does that its nothing really they motor jus started to sound louder like real deep but it runs fine and drive like new so im not worried about it alot of older cars do this. kinda sounds like its broken in and now its a deep hum but if your having a grinding issuse it might be a syncronizer or a clutch but that should not be related to the hum noise
oh i see .. yeah i asked my homeboys out here, they were also telling me that it might be cause the car is getting older and breaking in .. but then again they all ride bikes.. so i was not too sure if i should take their advice cause there is a huge difference between a car and a motorcycle.. and as for the clutch, im thinking i need something stronger so the way i drive wont screw up a stock clutch all over again.. any suggestions on aftermarket clutches?
as far as the motor like i said my truck does that its hard to say what is wrong with your car with out checking it out so take it in anyway but just know that someone will try to tell you that you need something and unless you know anything abuot care you might spend more than you need to
what mods do you have and if you burn a stock clutch maybe you need to learn to drive all over again not calling you a bad driver but if you keep having to replace the stock clutch and you dont have over 100k miles something is wrong
yeah you might have a point on my shifting .. and as for my motor ill keep looking around for a friend who will have the hook up on a reliable mechanic so i wont get screwed over on price.. thanx a lot for your input .. any suggestion helps
as far as a clutch f you cant manage to keep a stock one in tact consider something stage 2 or 3 its a little stiffer and harder to use but made alot stronger as well. really the only thing i can say is that dont ride the clutch and redlining is not a bad thing but every place you go can do alot of damage that might also be a reason for that premature huming noise you here
well, the way i estimate when to switch gears is usually by the mile per hour i go.. like when i start off naturally im on 1st gear.. when i go about 15mph i get to 2nd gear , third gear i switch on 30mph and so on.. dont kno if thats good or bad?.. aside from that i was also told by a friend that i cost when i drive too that might be a problem as well i just never notice when i do it
well i dont know what he means by coast when you drive...... but most of the 3g gt i have seen or driven feel very comfertable at shifting at about 3k rpm but if you have already trained your car for every 15mph to shift you cant really go back. what i mean by train is your parts start to wear in like your belt if you only use one hole it starts to stretch out. basically you cant return the belt hole to the original size like you cant teach your car to do something its done for so long i mean you could but it would only creat 2 points of wear and would not ever feel rite. if it was me i would just chill you might be shifting every 15 mph and thats good but how quickly do you get to that 25mph you flooring it or just creeping
i sometimes floor it and sometimes creep it .. in other words i pretty much have confused the hell out of my car and i would have to say that is where i have gone wrong.. u know, i never really looked at it that way as far as the belt goes.. it makes a lot of sense, i really need to reevaluate my shifting
We need to meet up sometime. And you need to check out Club3G as well
As for your problem I've got good news and bad news: good being I have an answer for you, and bad being it may not be what you wanna hear. Now this is all predicated on the idea that this "noise" your hearing is a ticking sound, much like that of a diesel engine, that's got no rhyme nor reason... just a tapping sound that's like a bunch of ball bearings shaken in a tin can.
The clutch and TOB design on the 3G is nothing short of stupid. Regardless of whether or not you replace both, after sometime the springs in the clutch and the engagement of the TOB will always fail - not that it's any cause for alarm, but it's just an annoying thing that you'll have to live with.
It's what we call "TOB rattle", and something that, gladly, the BG6 transmission on the 4G V6 doesn't have.
So no worries about whether or not your car is breaking down. It's not. If you try depressing your clutch you'll find that the noise goes away, and when you release it, you'll hear it creep back up.
Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum! And chyea...my first post cuz I have this same problem with my 03 Eclipse GTS. Whenever I first turn my car on, I don't hear it. But after my engine comes to temp and what not, like I will be idling at a light and there that rattling sound will be. At first I thought my tranny and/or clutch was going, so I took it in to Mits. and they said it was "normal" for my car...so I continued. And its gotten a little louder over the past few months...and from the sounds of it...its normal? *whew* Glad to hear my car ain't falling apart! But even if I replace the clutch it will still come back or wont fix it? *confused*
I recommend you to go here Club3G is the same people that are hosting this club4g site andthey are very knowledgeable overthere and friendly. Go there they will be able to help you.
hey whats up bry.. sorry for the long response time on this .. yeah i doubt you should be overly concerned on this noise.. i got a brand new clutch system in and it is working great and still have the similar noise to it.. its just something that the 3g does.. i have spoken with other 3g owners and they have the same thing happening to them.. none the less if you took it to the eclipse dealership and they told you the same i think that is more than proof enough.. but yeah dont stress too much, i freak out with every little noise myself mainly cause the previous vehicles i owned were pieces of crap and always broke down LOL
Even aftermarket clutches, though you're provided with a new throwout bearing (TOB), after sometime you'll still start getting that rattling noise after sometime. You'll know it's the the same problem we're describing here since whenever you depress the clutch the noise ceases.
It's a design flaw. Some folks might say it's the springs, some say it's the TOB. Quite frankly I don't really know anymore. But it doesn't hurt anything. It's unfortunately something we have to deal with.
This problem is no longer prevalent in the 4G, thank God. Aisin Warner FTW!

Yea, at the dealer, they said it was the TOB that was making the noise. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one with this problem! Woot, whew...
THanks yal!
