Hello all, I have had my 4g 2007 Eclipse 2.4 m/t for about 2 months. Tonight on my way home I started noticing a strange sound from my engine. I pulled over and popped the hood. It sounds like a lot of valve clatter as well as a constant clinging sound going on with the bottom end of the motor. It still had all of the power it just sounds absolutely horrible. I checked the oil and it has oil in it. Any recommendations of what to check out?

It's weird because when I have the key in the on position I have a timer like sound going but then it goes away. This is before the engine is running.

:ditto:

If it's louder then normal it could be an exhaust leak from around exhaust manifold, or exhaust connections. It also could be your CAT broke up inside and the honey comb it bouncing around.

But our engines do have a tick to them like the valves are lose, but that is a lower ticking sound.

Thank you both for the replies. I'm soaking the bolts with pb blaster to take the heat shield off and taking a look. I took a video, however it would not let me upload.

I think you need one more Post to upload pic's and videos. But I would like to hear what's going on with that noise.

If you are taking the time to remove heat shields, don't worry about putting them back anytime soon, they won't effect anything.

I tried, to no avail. It keeps saying invalid file. I couldn't find what type of video file would be accepted here.

Alright, I took off the heat shields and hit the manifold and everything else along the exhaust. I didn't notice anything loose sounding. However, what I did notice was a burning rubber smell this time. The strange thing is the sound went away for a second and then came back.

Update, I decided to take it to a shop. I was driving it over and really started smelling the burning smell and when I was coming to a stop the engine was actually stalling. I'm very at a loss to what the issue will be.

I will update this thread when I find out what the issue is.

Sound on the video keeps cutting in and out.

Burning rubber, stall, did it start up again, did you make it to the shop, how many miles do you have on your Eclipse? Yep, that's a lot of questions. When was the last time your time belt was changed? If you above 70,000+ mileage... Hmm.

The car has 100k miles. I do not know if the previous owner replaced the timing belt. I took the cover off and inspected it, it looked good. After it stalled, it did start back up.

Well 100,000 sounds like a good time to change the timing belt seeings how it should be changed at 70,000. Most members will tell you that when they changed their belts that they looked brand new, no cracks, no missing teeth. However, belts do stretch and timing can start to go away. Many members ask the same question, how do I know if the belt was changed?? You can't tell!!

If you car is running rough, I'm surprised you're not getting a check engine light. Have you taken your car to an auto parts store to have any pending codes?? It could be anything from MAF sensor, bad plugs, to a bad CAT.

Alright, so the verdict was AC compressor going bad. I was quoted $1,100 to fix it. So, I'm going to eliminate the AC altogether. Thank you for all of your help.

A bit pricey if you ask me... You can kill to birds with one stone. You are going to need to change your timing belt soon. The same basic parts need to come out for the timing belt change, so you can probably half the labor charges and save some money. Plus to get the old compressor out, you'll have to tear into it to remove the compressor and figure out a new serpentine belt setup seeing how the serpentine belt runs the compressor.
