Have you tried this set-up?

I would like to gather your opinions about this:

I could pretty much get a good deal for this rims with tires in it.
However the tires that come with it are:
FRONT: 225/45/18
REAR: 245/45/18

I am lowered with Eibach Pro-kit. Will these work? I could purchase another set that would match any of these tire sizes to make it even all around. And if I do, i like the 245/45. I just wanna know if this will work. Pros and Cons?

I am not lowered but the 225/45 will be perfectly fine in the front. as far as the rear is concerned it is very close to stock that you want to run i dont see any issues. You are only increasing sidewall by .1 inch by going up to 245/45 in the rear.

I currently run the stock 235/45/18 in the front with 255/45/18 in the rear with no clearance issues and plenty of room left over.

Thanks for the reply. Appreciate it. I did check the tire calculator site prior and it did show minute difference, perhaps, i just wanted to find out actual experiences.
It should be great then. Rims are brand new condition with 70% tread life on the tires for $500.

I dont think you want to run smaller tires up front for the simple reason your front tires are doing all of the work so the more tread up there the better. I run 245/35/19's on mine and the size is perfect. i could actually go a little bit larger and still have plenty of clearance.

staggered isnt stupid depending on how you how driving your car. Try doing something other than a straight line... You still benefit from traction in the rear. Especially with our cars big ass

You need to give us information on your rim size. If theyre not staggered, yes...thats dumb to run staggered tire sizes without proper fitment. You wll just get more sidewall
roll which does not help anything.

Just because we have a big ass doesnt mean theres more weight. We have a horrblie f/r weight ratio. More weight in the back does help, but other than aesthetics, staggered set ups dont really serve a purpose..on fwd atleast. I dont mind staggered set ups, but the
purpose is minimal beyond looks for us.

One of the most important things to consider when taking a turn on a road course/autox is how fast you can shit the weight to your front tires when entering the turn. You can then use that weight transfer to accelerate through the turn. Running more tire in the rear end allows you to accelerate faster through the turn without concern of losing grip in the rear end since most of your vehicle weight is shifted to the front end during this time.

To add alot of this is going to depend on your driving ability and experience if you are comfortable taking a turn that aggresively then it is a benefit if you drop speed considerably in turns and are more concerned about only front tire grip without using heavy weight transfer then as stupid as it will look put your larger size in the front. But the faster you can enter a turn and shift the cars weight using your braking the more benefit you recieve from a staggered setup.

i dont know that there is anybody on this forum with exception to maybe the guys at rre that have the time,money, and resources to "PROPERLY" corner balance our car. Just placing coilovers on the car and doing some mediocre adjustments doesnt do the trick. Just the first day of corner balancing on a vehicle is spent taking mostly stock weights before making adjustments. So unless you have those resources then no just having spent your pocket change on a coilover set will not do the trick. A staggered setup allows the weekend racer which is where i would place the majority of us on the forum to have more predictable cornering and drive home.


Rough estimate of the time and money needed to properly setup corner balancing for a race application would be between 3-5k and you can kiss your current tire wear characteristics goodbye.

I am not denying that there are better ways to accomplish this but to say that a staggered tire setup is pointless or stupid just because it is a FWD car is pure ignorance.

Im going with do more research before just saying something is dumb or pointless. But either way im not much for debating with people that come back with minimal info. I think that the original poster got the information they wanted and can make a desicion.

Info over ones opinion is much more useful :)

well i'll bring my opinion then ;)
i think a staggered setup on a FWD is not as useful as a RWD obviously, but this is definitely something that would look cool on the Eclipse' big ass...
think about it... not many people out there know the Eclipse to begin with... out of all these, how many people know if its FWD or RWD?? so by running a staggered setup you'll look even cooler to lots of people, but the few people who actually know their sh** will look at you and laugh... so what? i think it looks good, go for it :)

Just another thought to this debate: if you want to minimize/stiffen rear shift in cornering simply apply the adjustable rear sway bar and tighten it to the setting (one of three) that you are comfortable with...tightest causing the stiffest cornering but more chance of tipping or skidding and the loosest for more inexperienced drivers to allow for slop and body roll when making crappy turns, hahaha...

Staggered rear wheels on a FWD = dumb idea

Your choice but as a friend, I'll reiterate that it's a bad move for a front drive motor vehicle.

I'm not saying staggered is a good or bad idea, what i AM saying is 225 is WAY too small for our torque happy cars (especially the GT) to be running in the front. Weight shifting or not, when i increased my overall tire width (both front and rear) my handling increased dramatically. One person on the site who was running with a pretty good offset was BEMINE_014, the visual combination was amazing and the handling characteristics where still VERY good. It all boils down to driver preference.

i drive like a granny, i don't race, i am constantly left behind by corollas and civics...so i'm still okay with the set-up, right?
anyway the tires are nangkang crap (they were just a bonus, i was after the rims)..when they're beaten up, i'll go back to standard similar sizes all around.
