The rattling sound from you car is made by all manual eclipses. Mine does it as well as the other 5 GTs I've driven. It's normal, it's not throwout bearing, it's transmission noise. Don't worry about it.

 

I agree with you. Mine makes some transmission noise when the car is idling in neutral. If you push the clutch in it goes away and when you let it off it comes back. It has done it since day one. Car shifts and drives fine.

 

I think your fine. If you press the clutch and the noise increases, that would be your throw out bearing.

 

The noise wasn't there before so i don't think is normal. When I step on the clutch pedal is goes away.

 

Check your transmission fluid level. There is an inspection plug on the side. Is it leaving any fluid on the ground? The cooler temperatures will effect the noise aswell. The oil gets thicker.

 

The fluid level is fine. Is leaving nothing on the ground.

 

as I said, I've driven brand new less than 50 mile standard GTs off the lot that sounded like that, kinda low end rattle. Mine just turned over 43,000 miles and had made the noise since I got it. I've been doing clutch work since 1982 and can guarantee you that is not a throw out bearing. A throwout bearing makes noise moving in gear or when the clutch is pushed in not in neutral with the clutch out. Take it to a Mitsubishi shop, they'll tell you the same thing. If you take it to a transmission shop or independent shop they'll gladly rape you for a new clutch so you can still have the same sound.

 

Not to degrade anybody's experience or tech knowledge buuuuut....There is no way the sound can be normal. Mine makes the same sound desribed in the first post here. Start the car and keep the clutch pressed to the floor and your hear nothing....Release your foot....and the noise is there. Put it in to gear and as soon as you start moving, there it is. I hear it throughout all of the gears and tried riding it out like everyone says but it keeps getting louder. I have a new stock clutch kit installed and it got a little louder!!! The sound I hear makes me picture something rubbing against the pressure plate teeth...The car just hit 107k and I have had it since 30k. Ive also noticed lately that it will sometimes make a "chirp" noise.(not sure how to desribe that one) It is definitely connected to the same issue. When I hear thart one it sounds like the clutch is getting touched every so often. I refuse to believe that the car will make this noise forever and if so I will gladly ruin my credit and stop making payments. Luckily I have another car and I was able to register that why I figure this out. I do pretty much all my own mechanics although my friend(professional) did the clutch this time as I had to work waaay to much at the time to replace it myself.

Bottom line: Somebody somewhere has to know of something that can fix this sound. It isn't natural and I think people are confusing it with a different noise.

PS the car drives and shifts fine. Just has that moise that I know is making more troubles if it keeps driving.

So anyone claiming to have this issue gotten any concrete results? Mine has been making the noise for the past year, but I've continued to ignore it, but lately it's been louder, squeakier, and occurs more often than before. Just wondering if I should be concerned.

An online guy from AAMCO said it could be the inputs(as cranswick said) or the coutershaft bearings...I think I'm just gonna get a rebuild kit or something.

 

This is a normal thing for the the gt, I too had it from the beginning. If you are really bothered by it, bleed your clutch with dot4 fluid. And change to a heavier weight tranny fluid. I recommend royal purple 75w-90, and if this noise really bugs you do NOT get a lightweight flywheel ! But I also agree that out throw out bearings suck ass. The lines should be bigger and should have a better way of keeping the fluid cool, and also the clutch should have it's own res tank !

I still have the noise. But when the car get warm up noise become quite little bit but is still there. Change the gear oil to synthetic still the same. I think may be are the springs on the clutch disc got loose. Also when i'm driving and go downhill and let gas pedal off I hear the sound.

 

Just back form the transmission shop. The input shaft bearing is bad. The shop will replace all the bearings in the transmission.

To the people who say its "normal":
There's a difference between a rattle and when something just isn't right....and as far as the "if it ain't broken, don't fix it", well I believe in that too....this noise is something broken. If your distributor wasn't firing to all your plugs but it still runs, would you drive it until it completely shut off? Or would you replace it even though since it works, it technically isn't broken...just not working properly?

Keep running a tranny with bad bearings and save money for a whole new one because eventually you will be left somewhere on the side of the road.

People come to forums for help, whether they are asking for help or providing it. We should all have at least one thing in common(eclipse) and that should be enough for us to give solid quality advice. I'm just glad that I have enough sense to not drive till it causes more damage and go from a set of bearings to a complete trans swap. It's that kind of advice that depletes my faith in mechanics, regardless of tenure or experience. All I'm saying is don't be so quick to not only tell someone wrong info but to not even listen to the person enough to truly understand the issue. :wallbash:

 

I also tried to take a video of what mine does today but its barely noticeable on camera. I guess it isn't as loud as I thought.
